Even as the world celebrates yet another year of the International Women’s Day, gender inequality remains one of the most pressing problems in the world today.

Women are still fighting for their rights, and many are still struggling to be seen as equals. Violence against women is witnessed on a daily basis, varying from one action to another.

Gender Equality

Gender equality is an important issue that needs to be addressed to make life better for everyone. It is a fundamental human right and a prerequisite for social justice. Gender equality will lead to more opportunities, better health, and improved quality of life for all people.

The gender gap between men and women has reduced over the years, but there is still more to be done.

Violence against women, shaming victims of sexual assault, unequal pay between men and women, and discrimination against women in leadership are some of the many inequality issues that need addressing. Interventions, ranging from sensitizing men on the rights of women and strengthening policy to establishing and strengthening reporting and justice channels for victims of violence, ought to be the main focus towards eradicating these biases.

Gender Equality and Sustainability

Gender equality is not only the fifth of the 17 sustainable development goals but also the sustainable development goals and the Paris Agreement are both rooted in the principle of gender equality.

What is the connection between gender equality and sustainability you ask? Sustainable development is reliant on a discrimination-free society. This goal will be achieved through ensuring equal access to resources and rights to all groups. Development and interventions ought to be customized to reach all regardless of their intersectionality. This will give both men and women equal chances to developenr and economic advancement.

For instance, studies show that 773 million adults are illiterate, with most of them being women. How are both boys and girls expected to thrive in a homogenous economy if resources, privileges, and rights are distributed unequally in discrimination against women? How will a woman pursue her dream career if she is constantly turned down because it is “
a men-only kind of job?’

Gender equality, therefore, matters because it has a direct and profound impact on the lives of girls and women. By ensuring that women have the same opportunities as men, they can live their lives to the fullest.

In celebration of International women’s day 2022, we stand with the whole world in advocating for breaking the biases! Women’s rights and sustainability go hand-in-hand because, without one, the other won’t be there.
